RAF Abingdon Fire Dump and Battle Damage Repair Flight
The following shots were taken sometime around 1984 - 1985. Abingdon at this time was a full of rare and unusual ex RAF aircraft. Thankfully some of them have ended up being preserved. Around this time Abingdon was home to a number of ex Britsih Airways VC10s which were destined to become tanker conversions for the RAF. After this a number of Nimrod AEW.3s also appeared at the airfield following the decision not to proceed with the AEW programme. The RAF consequently bought the Boeing E.3A Sentry in place of the Nimrod which remains in service today.
